Mission Statement

The mission of Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence, and inspire social change, through education, support, and advocacy.

Impact and Programs

Accomplishments A Safe Haven. 615 women and children received 11,396 nights of safety. A Lifeline. 8,907 calls were answered on our 24-hour emergency help line. A Voice. 887 clients were supported by our civil and criminal justice advocacy services including: filing of protection orders, support during civil and criminal court proceedings and legal representation. A First Responder. 220 victims of sexual and domestic violence received crisis intervention, safety planning, and support at local hospitals and clinics. A Community. 303 women and children began their healing process at weekly support groups services and through ongoing therapy provided to 48 adults, children, and youth. An Advocate. 105 families received personal follow up support services and housing and financial assistance imperative in achieving violence-free lives. A Role Model. 1,400 children, youth, and parents were touched through school-based 1-1 advocacy and support groups and on-site groups at Lino Juvenile Correctional Facilities; 5,120 students about healthy relationships through 177 classroom presentations. A Mentor. 3,443 community members increased their awareness and knowledge through community education presentations, professional trainings, and community events. A Promise. 21 older adults were helped through our Aging Services Program since its launch in June 2015. A Helping Hand. 108 volunteers contributed 7,709 hours of their time and talent to our programs; a value of over $191,415. Through all of our services, Alexandra House impacted the lives of over 22,000 people.
Current Goals Our goal for the current year is to complete the goals outlined in our 2014-2018 strategic plan as follows: Goal 1: Elevate the reputation and knowledge of Alexandra House. Strategies a. Demonstrate the impact of Alexandra House as a community resource and service provider b. Increase and expand communications with stakeholders c. Improve our ability to tell the story of our work to the public Goal 2: Collaborate with the community partners to prevent and end sexual and domestic violence. Strategies a. Build public will and engage people to take action b. Increase education for community members and professionals c. Strengthen our public policy presence locally and statewide Goal 3: Expand, explore and move in new programmatic directions. Strategies a. Work collaboratively in developing and offering programs and services b. Be responsive, cutting edge and use new technologies in program delivery c. Improve outreach and engagement with new and diverse communities not currently accessing services or disproportionately affected by SV/DV Goal 4: Grow, diversify, and amplify Alexandra House’s organizational resources and culture of excellence. Community or Constituency Served Alexandra House supports everyone who is affected by domestic and sexual violence and abuse in later life. We are a resource for victims and survivors of sexual violence in any form. We also offer support to friends and family of victim/survivors and other concerned persons. While we work with victims throughout the metro area and state, a majority of clients reside in Anoka County – 70% in 2014. Anoka County encompasses 423 square miles and is part of the seven county metro area surrounding Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. It is a mix of rural, suburban, and urban communities and has a population of 341,864 according to the 2014 Census Bureau Estimate. Anoka County is changing demographically. 16.6% of Anoka County residents report being persons of either non-white or Hispanic or Latino origin, an annually increasing figure. There is also a significant immigrant population in the southern portion of Anoka County. 6.7% of Anoka County residents are foreign born and 10.4% report a language other than English in their home. 30.6% of residents are age 50 and older. Clients served in 2014 spanned a variety of age categories—21% age birth to 12; 24% age 13-18; 47% age 25-55; and 2% age 55 and over. Likewise, clients served represented a variety of ethnic/race categories—17% African American; 10% Hispanic/Latino; 2% Asian/Pacific Islander; 3% American Indian; 10% Multi-Racial; 53% Caucasian; and 5.5% Other/Immigrant/Unknown. Domestic and sexual violence impacts every socio-economic background. However, families living in poverty face many more barriers in escaping the relationship. In 2014, 73% of all clients reported an income that fell below 100% the federal poverty guidelines and 87% reported an income that fell below 200% the federal poverty guidelines. To accomplish our mission we focus our programming in four areas – prevention, intervention, follow up, and system’s change, community education and professional training. We have an almost 40 year history of providing high quality, mission-driven, comprehensive services in Anoka County. We are well-respected and supported by our community, have well established partnerships that have been in place for decades, employ communications and outreach strategies that make our services well-known in the community, are committed to victim-centered, trauma informed services, and we have the capacity, infrastructure, and proven track record to be successful.
