Impact and Programs
Accomplishments
In 2015, the Reading Center provided 7,344 lessons to 161 students one-on-one, 76 adults and children were tested for reading disabilities, 26, 4-6 year olds were screened for free, 65 students enrolled in our Best of Basics courses to work on skills over the summer and 28 young learners attended Reading Clubs with their parents. $56,357 in scholarships were provided to 70 children whose families could not afford the cost of testing and tutoring. 26% of Reading Center students receive scholarship assistance.
Through our partnership with the United Way and school districts, we trained 53 teachers who brought their Orton Gillingham training back into their classrooms and reached an estimated 1700 students. Another 36 educators and parents were trained in our Basic and Advanced institutes offered at the Reading Center.
Through a community partnership (Rochester Reading Champions) we helped 8 previously underserved, at-risk children and young adults with 125 hours of free Orton Gillingham tutoring from a trained volunteer. As part of this program 7 volunteers received full Institute training.
2,718 parents and others attended one of 27 free outreach educational presentations offered by the Reading Center or stopped by one of 9 Reading Center displays to learn about dyslexia and our services from a Reading Center expert.
Current Goals
In 2017 we will begin the second year of a three year capacity building plan, the goals of which are: 1) increasing awareness of dyslexia, 2) increasing the number of students receiving tutoring services by increasing the number of trained OG tutors, and 3) by harnessing technology to make our tutors more efficient and offer additional training programs online. We are already tutoring more students online, representing 25% of all student sessions provided in 2016.
