Accomplishments
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s commitment to our mission and the underlying charitable purpose of our organization is evidenced in the time, resources and energy we invest in helping people and communities understand and address addiction as a treatable disease.
Perhaps the most profound way we meet our commitment to community is by providing treatment services to individuals and families who seek and qualify for care but are unable to pay the full cost. In 2013, our Patient Aid fund awarded nearly 2,000 individuals scholarships so that they could access the care they needed.
The Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies continues to work to prepare future leaders in addiction counseling through the Master of Arts in Addiction Counseling and the Certificate in Addiction Counseling programs. In 2013, 44 students graduated with master’s degrees. Moreover, as part of the school’s emphasis on public engagement, our students provided more than 7,000 hours of clinical services at agencies reaching underserved and economically disadvantaged populations. We also welcomed 128 practicing medical professional to week-long courses throughout the year to so that they could learn more about screening, diagnosing, referral to treatment, and recovery management for substance use disorders.
Hazelden’s Butler Center for Research conducted clinical and institutional research, collaborated with other research centers, and communicated their findings. In 2013, the Center completed more than 30 data analysis projects that helped inform clinical care and academic programming. From this research, several manuscripts were published in peer reviewed journals that focused on a variety of topics, including the role of cognitive processing as a predictor of patient usage. Other manuscripts were submitted to journals and are currently under review, including a paper on clinical and substance use severity among LGBTQ patients in residential treatment.
Hazelden publications continued to provide inspiration, guidance and encouragement to those impacted by the disease of addiction. In 2013, 137 new offerings were published taking the forms of curricula, e-books, digital and mobile applications, and subscriptions. Additionally Hazelden’s BookAid program donated 3,679 packages of 14,142 products that reached the lives of more than 200,000 people through 73 libraries serving programs and institutions in need.
Current Goals
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s primary goal for the coming year is to continue our work to transform the care delivery model so that we may better address the chronic nature of the disease of addiction and the opportunities healthcare reform brings to the field overall.
By creating a seamless care network on a national scale our hope is to make treatment and ongoing recovery increasingly accessible to more individuals. Our focus remains on outcomes with efforts being made to incorporate additional evidence-based approaches and patient-centric programs designed to meet the needs of the individuals and families we serve. This work will be strengthened by our continued connectedness to the communities we serve, including our alumni network and referents as well as a range of innovative products and services that are slated to be developed by our world-renowned publishing department.
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation specializes in assessment and treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders for young people ages 12–25. In 2015, we will work to expand access for youth through the addition of assessment services and outpatient care.
Moreover, Higher Education, Research, and Professional Programs will be working to implement a variety of innovative programs. Among the highlights for 2015 is the pilot of an online degree program through the Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies.
Community or Constituency Served
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation serves individuals, families and communities affected by addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Treatment and recovery programs are available to individuals as young as 12 years of age, while our family support programs serve family members as young as seven who have experienced addiction in their family.
