Images of the devastation and those in crisis are visible throughout all media channels. If you’re like us, you’re watching and wondering how to help from afar, wishing you could be closer to jump into action. Since traveling to affected areas often isn’t an option, and volunteer opportunities are limited, we’re shifting our focus to making an impactful donation.
Here are a few things to consider before making a charitable donation:
- Cash donations are the best way to help those in need. Cash donations can be used quickly by local organizations to meet immediate needs and can be used to purchase relief supplies locally, bringing revenue to the local economy. Cash donations are also versatile, meaning they can help provide whatever is needed, no matter how fast the situation changes.
- Before giving, do your research. Go online to see what organizations are doing good work in the area. Monetary donations to established relief agencies are always more beneficial to survivors and to relief operations, says the Center for International Disaster Information. Choose organizations that have a strong track record for providing relief and rebuilding support.
- Consider donating now to an organization that can help during the crisis, but also consider donating to an organization that will be focused on the recovery. The immediate needs are great, but the long-term recovery is going to stretch far beyond our attention when the next story or crisis hits. Organizations that will be part of the rebuilding and recovery efforts will need our support for a long time to come.
